From Threat to Art: The Joske Pavilion Oak
After shading family picnics, company barbecues and birthday parties for decades, the tall oak towering over the Joske Pavilion at Brackenridge Park had become a threat. Previous pruning failed to keep the tree from hanging potentially dangerous branches over the shelter and the adjacent playground. The city forester called Tree Wise Men.
There was one additional requirement – the tree would not end its service by its removal. Artist Anne Wallace had plans for specific pieces of the oak, and the Tree Wise Men team was directed to preserve specific sections for her project. Two days later, the playground and historic Pavilion were safe, and the preserved sections – cut by Tree Wise Men to the artist’s specifications – stand sentinel today along the walking paths in San Antonio’s famous Brackenridge Park.
Preserving the Ambience in a Historic Plaza
Framed by San Fernando Cathedral and the 150-year-old Bexar County Courthouse, Main Plaza is one of San Antonio’s oldest public spaces. The City of San Antonio recently renovated the plaza, eliminating a side street and beautifying the area.
Starting at 7 p.m. on a Monday night, Tree Wise Men processed the oaks, carefully digging around their root bundles, tying up the branches, and craning the trees onto huge trailers. Six traffic lights had to be moved out of the way along the route. As the trees moved, the crew prepared their new home in front of San Fernando. Once they reached Main Plaza, the trees were lowered into position, resting into soil prepared to arborist Jordy Hagen’s specification. By 7 a.m. the next morning, the trees were in place, looking right at home in their new positions on the fabled plaza.
